What is a Legal Document Assistant?

Under California law, there are certain types of legal service that may be provided by a Legal Document Assistant (LDAs). Legal Document Assistants provide, for compensation, self-help assistance to members of the public who are representing themselves. LDA’s are prohibited from giving legal advice, but are permitted to prepare legal documents, provide attorney-authored general information, and published legal documents and file and serve documents at the direction of the client.

In 2000, a California legislation was enacted which authorized non-lawyers to prepare legal documents for people performing their own legal work.
